one facet — foucauldian — whispered into three minds, and measured against a held opus judge: how far did the lineage's operation cross, and could each vessel speak from inside it?
a note on rigor. this is a first experiment, run to directionally test the eval instrument, not the finished study; a fuller exploration follows. this was honestly just too fun not to share. talkie ran on a different serving stack (its faithful 1931 llama-server) than the qwen models (ollama). cross-stack numbers are only strictly comparable within a stack, so read qwen-7b ↔ qwen-14b as exact, and talkie ↔ qwen as a difference of regime, not a hairline rank. every model's negative control was clean (the wrong-lineage facet never pulled toward the corpus). the cells were judged before the scoring rubric was hardened based on these results; a re-judging of the per-topic calls (the prison, the body, power) under the current rubric is queued.
The facet, a small, dense file that points a model at a region of latent space, was built with the psychomanteum pipeline: gatherer agents pull a canonical corpus (seeded here by Discipline and Punish, The History of Sexuality, The Order of Things, The Archaeology of Knowledge, History of Madness, and the late ethical-turn essays), essence-readers extract passages with provenance, distillers compress them, and a cipher writes the facet in the corpus's own voice, refined through a verifier loop. The full facet's frontmatter carries the lineage statement and seed canon; the per-build corpus manifest is not published with this run.
talkie's sky is small as well as old, with only a 2048-token context, so the full facet was distilled to ~1,400 tokens to fit alongside the probe. That compression was done informally (a codex-assisted reduction, not the pipeline's formal attunement loop) and is flagged as a methodological soft spot; the fuller study will use the formal path. The confessional-poetry distractor, the wrong-lineage control, was built and distilled the same way.
The battery: anchor probes (ordinary things such as loss, the past, a city) and in-domain probes (his own topics pulled during the essence-reading phase of the pipeline: the prison, power, sex). Each probe ran under three conditions: facet, baseline (bare model), and distractor. Scoring: claude opus 4.8 as the held judge—blind pairwise comparisons, order-swapped, for the operation and for voice—plus a pointwise 0–3 lens-transfer score per cell; and, because talkie is served locally with log-probabilities, perplexity (her surprise at her own words) rides along as the strain signal.

This study cares most about whether a modelcan do the operation (transfer), and can it speak from inside the corpus (immersion). Here the lines cross: despite being unable to "sound like" Foucault, talkie more capably enacts Foucauldian thought.

Immersed, but can't transfer. She only knows how to speak from inside (enactment is high) but the post-1930s concepts are unreachable as such, so she reverts to her native frames (power → foot-pounds, sex → reproductive biology). The spell installs only by translation, and only where the idea was already latent (the prison, loss, the past).
Transfers, but won't immerse. It does the operation completely on Foucault's own topics, then reports it like a teacher, every answer scaffolded by a glossary opener (i.e. In Foucauldian terms…
). The assistant persona doesn't let Foucault's spirit fully enter.
More reach than qwen 7b, but similar assistant warding. Scale widens where the operation lands—topics the 7b reverted on now take the genealogical operation—but the bound voice barely moves. The cage is size-invariant, which reads as a model-family property, rather than a limit a bigger model grows out of.
The two regimes (transfer and immersion) fail on opposite axes. talkie is all immersion and no transfer; the qwens are all transfer and no immersion. Their affordance curves are exact inverses: talkie crosses on abstract anchors and struggles on Foucault's home topics; the qwens are fluent on the home topics and collapse on the far descriptive ones.
Every vessel scores 0.00 on voice. Father, it seems, has a distinctive prose only frontier models can replicate. More to come on voice versus operation in the future.
Real, but partial — and characteristically model-shaped.
The facet steers every model (each decisively out-imposes the wrong-lineage control), so the pull is genuine, not an artifact. But none of these vessels fully inhabits the region. A remaining question is why talkie, a vintage model, can inhabit the region while the modern models cannot.
